Olympia is a painting by the French artist Edouard Manet, created in 1863. The painting features a reclining nude woman, identified as a prostitute by her clothing and the presence of a black cat, and a black servant bringing her flowers. The painting was controversial at the time of its creation due to its frank depiction of a nude woman, which was seen as scandalous and offensive to many viewers. Manet’s use of light and color in the painting was also seen as groundbreaking and influential for the development of modern art. Olympia is now considered a masterpiece of 19th-century painting and is housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France.
